Design a Complete Story from Opening Hook to Mind-Blowing Conclusion

Story Structure and Plotting Workshop

This 2-Day Workshop Focuses on Designing a Compelling Story, with Twists, Turns, and Surprising but Inevitable Conclusions.

Impossible Decisions, Turning Points, Action Cycles, Moments of Despair, and Moments of Triumph...

Every story has its share of ups and downs, but a well constructed story knows how to balance just enough wins to keep a reader hopeful, with more than enough complications to make the whole thing seem impossible.
Throw in a lie-your-character-believes, and the right obstacles to push them towards change, and you have a compelling story that readers can’t put down.
In this two-day workshop, we’ll examine the elements of plot that every story needs to have, and how to bend and twist them to make them your own as you develop the outline for the story you want to tell.

Topics Presented Include:

Human Beings are Natural Storytellers that Crave Uncertainty and Excitement

Hi, I’m Charlotte, an award-winning author and story coach.

The bestselling books of the modern era all have one thing in common: their plot twists and turns keep readers guessing. They build mystery and suspense that keeps readers engaged. All while leading to a conclusion that couldn’t happen any other way.

As the writer, it is our job to weave multiple characters, conflicts, and storylines together.

But with so many moving pieces, how do you keep track of everything?

And, more importantly, how do you build your story in a way that keeps readers interested and engaged to the very end?

And how do you construct that all important Belief Shift in the main character, that will take them from someone who is surviving, to a hero that is thriving, making it all believable and relatable and serendipitous in the way it comes together?

There is no piece of story more important than the plot. And readers can be selective, turning away from books that don’t have the right pacing, tension, or mystery.

To create the perfect plot for our story, we need a deep understanding of Story Structure: how each moment of the plot weaves together and connects the story.

We need to understand how a character’s beliefs can change. And most importantly, how to present it in a way that readers connect to and understand.

Wrapping our heads around all the elements of a plot to create the perfect outline can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.

Plot Creation, to me, is a puzzle. It is about designing the key moments, and then connecting them. Once we understand how to design those key moments, building a well thought out plot becomes straight forward (no matter how many twists and turns we add in).

In this two day workshop, we’ll build your understanding of Story Structure and use this to build a complete plot outline for your story.

Let me share with you the basic framework that underlies all the most satisfying stories (regardless of genre) and how to use this framework as a leaping off point to build your unique story from.

Then, let’s go through the process together.

Whether you are working on a brand new story, fighting your way out of a dead-end draft, or deepening your understanding of your current work in progress, you will finish the workshop knowing what needs to happen for your plot to build and conclude in that mind-blowing, surprising-but-inevitable way.

You’ll have a better understanding of how your subplots tie into the main plot, how your theme and your main character’s belief shift underpin the key moments of your story, and how to use this understanding to create an unputdownable story.

-Charlotte.

FAQ

What if I can't Make the Live Workshop?

No worries, we know that sometimes life gets in the way, which is why you will have access to the complete recording in your course portal, which you can access for life.

When will the workshops be held?

Each Workshop is a 2-Day Event held on a weekend in January or February. The workshops will run from 9am to 1pm MST on their scheduled days.

how do I join the session?

You will receive an email a few days before the event to confirm the details. You’ll also find a Zoom Link (a regular website link to the Zoom workshop hosting room). Simply click on this link and follow the prompts!

What about Zoom? Is it easy to use?

After 2 years of a pandemic, most people are familiar with the video conferencing software, Zoom. It allows me to talk in real time, share my screen, and even bring you, the participants, on to speak one-on-one about your story.

I'm afraid other people will steal my idea, do I need to share my work?

While I truly believe that even if someone were to be inspired by your idea, they’ll never be able to write it as well as you, the original idea-haver, I understand the concern.

These workshops are designed to be interactive so that I can fully support you, but you will never have to share anything you don’t feel comfortable to, or asked to participate where you don’t want to. But also know that I always do my best to maintain a safe space for fun and creativity!

I'm just starting... what if I don't know much about my story yet?

You’re in the right place. These workshops help us understand the foundation of our story on a deeper level and clearly define many of the aspects that get overlooked.

Whether you’re just starting out, or bringing a story that you’ve been working on for a while, know that you will walk away having clearly defined these foundational pieces on which you can build the rest of your story.

Charlotte is an award-winning author of short stories and novels. She is also the creator of theWritable, a website dedicated to teaching and encouraging beginning storytellers to write deeply and fearlessly.

Her work has been featured on Amazon, Writer’s Digest, and various anthologies.

As an editor and story coach, Charlotte is focussed on helping authors share meaningful stories in compelling ways.

“I believe each of us has a story to tell, some insight that we can add to the fabric of human understanding. If we have the dream of being a writer, we have, not just the capacity to do it, but a kind of universal necessity. It’s one thing to have a story to share, that people need to hear, but we also need to know how to write it. What I do is take these stories, and help the authors see them to their full potential, in a way that will get readers to sit up and take notice.”
